"It is becoming a little more of a problem because of tighter construction," said Dr. John Van Wye, allergist with Regional Allergy and Asthma Consultants.

Studies have shown that half the nation's schools have problems linked to air quality, according to the EPA.

The problem known as "sick building syndrome" can be caused by poor ventilation.

"In general, the most effective therapy is avoidance and injections for the long term," said Dr. John Van Wye of Regional Allergy & Asthma Consultants.

"If one parent is allergic, you have a 40 percent chance of having allergies yourself," says John Van Wye, M.D., an allergist in Asheville, N.C. "If both parents are allergic, it jumps up to 70 to 80 percent."
