John Vallier from Los Angeles is an archivist in an ethnomusicology archive and is responsible for audiovisual preservation and digitization, description, and outreach of the collection.He can be contacted at jvallier@arts.ucla.edu

Among the project's key activities, says archivist John Vallier M.A. '00, M.L.I.S. '03, UCLA's principal investigator for the partnership, is the planning for Gospel House, which will become the physical core for gospel in Los Angeles and home to the GALA archives.

GALA also will expand upon Los Angeles-based gospel and related music collections in the UCLA archive and at HMF, Vallier says.

Another show which connects UCLA's resources to the world is "Sounds from the Vault of the Ethnomusicology Archive," hosted by graduate of the ethnomusicology program and current archivist, John Vallier.In his program, Vallier plays music from the Archive's 100,000 recordings, including unpublished field recordings from Taipei and Taiwan and pop, folk and classical music from Indonesia, Afghanistan and Africa as well as Japanese progressive rock.

Vallier likes to invite professors, visiting artists and graduate students into the studio to play music live or talk about their field of interest.He said that one of the benefits of the Internet medium is that his music can reach the worldwide ethnomusicology community.

Vallier began deejaying at KLA in '99.He was present when the FCC pulled the plug on the transmitter, but has was able to resist further government intervention through the power of ethnomusicology.Vallier is currently archivist at the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive-- http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/Archive/ --and a proud new Papa.
