"A couple days later, one of the fathers said to my husband, ‘Ever since my daughter saw Morgan run home after working for eight hours at camp, she's been working a lot harder.' So it turns out she was inspiring someone with her work ethic."
In all likelihood, that wasn't the first time.
Valley, a WBCA All-American who helped Rice Memorial High School to back-to-back state championships her junior and senior seasons, was ranked among the top 25 high school recruits in the nation from the Class of 2000 when she signed with UConn.
She finished her high school career with school records in points (1,363), assists (477) and steals (385), with the deft passing ability of Larry Bird and the work ethic and toughness, according to Auriemma, of former UConn standouts Kerry Bascom, Meghan Pattyson and Carla Berube.
She played 29 games as a freshman before being sidelined for the final 22 games of her sophomore season due to injury, suffering pain in both feet from an affliction called plantar fasciitis.
There were times Valley would run down the court and her mother would cringe.
