"Our findings indicate there may be an advantage to offering radiation therapy earlier after surgery to some patients found to have locally advanced prostate cancer, particularly if certain features of the tumor indicate the cancer may be aggressive," said Richard Valicenti, MD, Associate Professor and Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and lead author of the study.
The prevailing opinion has been that waiting to give a patient radiation therapy until his PSA level begins to rise following surgery (salvage therapy) avoids treating those patients whose cancer will never recur and is just as effective for controlling cancer progression as starting radiation therapy shortly after surgery (adjuvant therapy).
