Another keynote address was given by Dr. M.S. Valiathan, a cardiac surgeon and firm believer in the ancient Indian methods of Ayurveda, a 2,000-year-old system of medicine.According to Ayurvedic philosophy, a healthy body maintains equilibrium of tissues, systems, and the mind, and disease is merely a disturbance in that equilibrium. This system of medicine considers the patient's physical and mental well-being as the patient's own responsibility. It also prepares for the future by maintaining a method of training the next generation of health care professionals.Dr. Valiathan suggested the Ayurvedic model, with patient responsibility and investment into the training of the next generation of professionals as key components, as a possibility for a meaningful health care system.
