"Two years ago, we had computer labs with mismatched, outdated hardware," according to Cesario Valenzuela, vice president for business affairs at Sul Ross."Collegis helped equip all computer labs with new and identical computers through a negotiated, three-year lease program."Campus leaders estimate a cost savings of $240,000 over three years as a result.The university was also able to grow its number of stand alone Web courses from zero to 47 by the fall semester of 2001.Enrollment for Sul Ross' online classes is as much as four times that of traditional courses, and more Webbased offerings are in the works.Its improved technology program was also central to securing a $764,257 "Discovery Grant" from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board for the West Texas Wireless Initiative, a partnership between the University and the public school systems in its service area.The project, which loans laptop computers to students and gives them high-speed Internet access, is serving numerous educational objectives.
