Angelica Valenzuela has traveled the road that is so very familiar to many Latinas. She was born in Mexico and at the age of nine moved with her family to Santa Barbara, California.Growing up as a bilingual Latina in California allowed her the opportunity to stay connected with her Latino heritage and at the same time to become part of the mainstream American culture.
Today, she is living in Washington State where she is the Underwriting Supervisor at State Farm Insurance. Her department evaluates the eligibility of many different risk exposures for the company.During her 13 years with State Farm she has seen many changes within the industry."I find working in the insurance industry rewarding because of the value it provides for society.Insurance helps people manage the financial risks they face such as losing their homes or businesses due to fire or other perils," she said.
Education has been critical to this dynamic Latinas' success. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a Finance emphasis."Education is very important to me and has helped me achieve success in different areas of my life," says Valenzuela.
Being focused and determined is what Valenzula credits to getting her to where she is today.Early on she realized that education would be very important and valuable for her future."My family did not have the financial resources to send me to college so I made it through school with scholarships and the earnings from my part time jobs.I believe that determination and perseverance are keys to achieving one's goals," she added.
Not speaking English was another barrier that she needed to overcome. When she first arrived in the United States she spoke only Spanish and was unable to communicate with teachers and other children.Realizing that she was different from the other children at school made her aware that it would take hard work on her part if she was to succeed in her new world.
