   Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gerry attended Quaker schools as a child and came out at Cornell as a beer-swilling, somewhat overweight frat boy. He began running, dropped 80 pounds and came back to New York City, where he obtained an M.B.A. in marketing from New York University. He's now a marketing consultant at Lautman & Co., a small direct-mail firm that raises funds for nonprofit organizations such as Gay Men's Health Crisis, the ASPCA, and the Coalition for the Homeless. At 6'1", he speaks fluent English and spends most of his waking hours working out.
   
   In his relatively short time as a triathlete, Gerry has finished some two dozen triathlons, including, besides Penticton, half-Ironman distances in Philadelphia and Kingston, N.Y., and the Olympic distance in Montauk. In preparation for the Ironman, he ran his first marathon in Virginia Beach last year, finishing in 3:46, and will run Los Angeles this year. He'll be doing the triathlon and individual time trial at Gay Games in Amsterdam - and the Ironman, again, in Penticton.
