    Francesca Valente began her career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978 as assistant director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto, Canada.She directed from 1980 to 1985 the IIC of San Francisco.During her term, she received a proclamation from Dianne Feinstein, Mayor of San Francisco, for promoting Italian culture in the Western United States.She founded the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles in 1984.

    From 1986 to 1991, she served as Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto.From 1993 to 1998, she was responsible for anglophone Canada, including the Institute of Vancouver.While in Canada, she received a proclamation from Art Eggleton, Mayor of Toronto, and from Isabel Bassett, Minister of Culture, Ontario, for organizing Italy on Stage and Italy in Canada, two nationwide multi-media cultural festivals.During this term, she also served as the project director of The Fountain of Italy (1, 2) by Enzo Cucchi, a gift to Toronto's York University from the artist and Olivetti Canada in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute.

    In 1988, Dr. Valente was named by Toronto Life magazine one of Toronto's fifty most influential people.She has also been included in The International Who's Who of Canadian Women.

    From 1999 to 2001, while posted in Rome, she was responsible for Culture and Heritage at Commissione Nazionale Italiana, UNESCO, and was appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the cultural liaison between the Ministry and the City of Venice, which resulted in a formal agreement between the City of Venice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by Paolo Costa, Mayor of Venice, and Ambassador Francesco Aloisi de Larderel.During this time, she also co-curated the collection of contemporary art of La Farnesina.From November 2001 to March 2005, Dr. Valente served as Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Chicago, and Consul for Cultural Affairs.The jurisdiction for which she was responsible included 24 states.

    Francesca Valente graduated in Foreign Languages and Literature in 1968 from Cà Foscari University, Venice.In 1977, she received a Master of Arts in Canadian Literature from the University of Toronto, where she worked with Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan.In 1999, she was granted an honorary degree by York University for promoting Italian culture in Canada and Canadian culture in Italy.

    She has edited nearly 15 publications and translated over 35 works by renowned authors such as Margaret Atwood, Giorgio Bassani, Leonard Cohen, Northrop Frye, Marshall McLuhan, Michael Ondaatje, and Pier Paolo Pasolini.She has also written numerous articles, participated in many international festivals and conferences, and lectured at several universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Southern California, and La Sapienza in Rome.She was awarded the Elsa Morante Prize in Naples in 2002 for promoting Italian culture in the United States.
