Principal Dave Urquhart made that announcement late this morning stating that the dirt track had literally become a mud bath. In addition the grass field is soaked and the seating is so wet from the rain that it would simply be unacceptable for such a special occasion.

Urquhart adds that tickets are needed for entering the Main Gym.

(Principal Dave Urquhart assures that the education code is scrupulously followed at Summerville High and said the school's higher-than-average rate of suspensions is because student supervision at the small school is much more intense).

"We have high standards for our students and we hold them accountable through our discipline policy and we have support from our parents because they expect their students to attend a school that has rules and guidelines," said Principal Dave Urquhart.

Urquhart said one example of a situation students get suspended for is when they leave campus without proper permission. The campus is closed and the student body is told this at the beginning of the year and that serves as their warning.

"That's because our school board, and parents, have decided we want to know where the kids are," Urquhart said. "Ours have a lot to do with being disruptive on campus," he said, adding that their numbers have not spiked.

The Summerville Union High School District showed continued improvement, though Principal Dave Urquhart is concerned their scores may be misunderstood.

Summerville High and the Connections Academy have separate APIs because one is a public school and the other is a charter school.

"In reality, all of the students are in a classroom together," Urquhart said.

Summerville High students and Connections students are in the same classes together, taught by the same teachers.A realistic picture of improvement and growth would be a combination of the two scores.

Nevertheless, the district is happy with their scores.

"As in every given year, we have work to do," Urquhart said.

"One of the parts I really like is when younger students read the codes," said Principal Dave Urquhart."It just gives them a chance to stand tall ... the kids are so creative that we are always amazed at what they produce."

Urquhart and some teachers first came up with the idea in the mid-1990s during a conference in Grass Valley.

"I think it's become a powerful thing over the years," Urquhart said.
