Patrice Udelhofen, a nurse practitioner at Meriter Hospital's Women's Health Services, says self-education is gaining momentum."Now that there is new information available that women previously hadn't had access to, women are ready for more," she says.

Local experts also say HRT is beneficial in many ways, for many women.

"Women need to realize that the changes that accompany perimenopause are part of the process," says Udelhofen of Meriter Hospital."Because it is a process that usually occurs seven to 10 years before menopause, many women start experiencing changes in their 40s rather than their 50s.So they need to be prepared and educated even earlier."

Thus, many women turn to their health care providers for prescription hormones, or opt for alternative hormone supplements during perimenopause and often find the relief they need.

Patrice Udelhofen has more than 20 years of clinical and administrative experience as a registered nurse.She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Nursing, and in 1996 received national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and has Advanced Practice Prescriptive Authority.

She is currently developing a Women's Health Midlife Clinic at Meriter Hospital, Inc.This center is designed to foster comprehensive care to women in midlife, with a special emphasis on perimenopause, menopause and PMS issues.The clinic is part of a comprehensive Women's Health Center of Excellence program undertaken by Meriter.Patrice sees this project as the natural progression of her work.

Prior to coming to Meriter Hospital, Inc., she worked in New Glarus, Wisconsin with the Monroe Clinic - where she developed a strong midlife-focussed practice in women's health.Patrice also developed an annual women's seminar that provided health and financial education to women in midlife and beyond.She devotes a great deal of time to speaking publicly about health issues and recognizes that if women - the chief decision-makers in the family - are well informed, then all members benefit.

Patrice is excited and honored to be part of Wisconsin Public Television's Middlessence program: 'This is a time when changes are occurring and the decisions we make significantly impact our future health and well being.Becoming informed is essential to success.'

Our Nurse Practitioner - Patrice Udelhofen, RN, MS, APNP

Meriter Midlife Clinic Nurse Practitioner Patrice Udelhofen received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Pat is nationally certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and has Advanced Practice Prescriptive Authority.During her twenty years experience, she has held a variety of clinical and administrative positions.In addition to caring for women in her practice, Pat has developed women's seminars and gives community talks about midlife health care.Her goal is to provide the tools that women need to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families.
