Dr. Anthony O. Udekwu will join the hospital's staff and the surgical faculty at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at Amarillo as a full professor, said Cinda Courtney, a Tech spokeswoman.

The program will kick off Aug. 1 with initial evaluations, and the first surgeries are expected in October, Udekwu said.

"We're going to do the Roux-en-Y (procedure), but I'm sure you know there is no one operation that works for everybody," he said.

Udekwu will be in private practice with his office at the Women's Healthcare Associates building next to Northwest, said Derrick Miles, a NWTHS assistant administrator.

Udekwu, a Chicago native and son of a heart surgeon, said he taught at the University of Pittsburgh for 13 years after training at the University of Chicago.

He came to Amarillo following a five-year stint at Case Western Reserve
