Mary Simmons Trueheart

Mary Simmons "Mimi" Trueheart, a real estate lawyer who was active in the arts and was named one of Houston's "Women on the Move" in 1997, died Friday of breast cancer, family members said.She was 56.

Trueheart, who was known as Mimi Walker during her marriage to attorney Bill Walker, was described as "a generous, enthusiastic volunteer" for the Houston Grand Opera.

Trueheart also served as president of the board for DiverseWorks, an organization for alternative theater and artwork.

Emily Todd, a former director of DiverseWorks, said Trueheart had "that kind of elasticity and understanding of past, present and future (that) is really rare."

Todd said Trueheart, as president of the board, used her legal skills to help bring stability to the organization.

As an attorney, Trueheart worked for Exxon Corp. and its subsidiary Friendswood Development for 25 years.She then joined Wilson, Cribbs, Goren & Flaum in 2000.She was board certified in commercial real estate law and had recently been appointed to the board of the Texas College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Trueheart attended Barnard College and received bachelor's, master's and law degrees from the University of Houston.She was editor of the Houston Law Review.

In 1997, Trueheart was named one of Houston's 10 "Women on the Move," which recognizes women who excel in their professions and contribute to community and charitable events.The award was sponsored by the Houston Chronicle, Foley's, Channel 11 and Texas Executive Women.

Trueheart was a big fan of the Houston Rockets and loved to go antique shopping, said her sister, Susan Trueheart Walker.
