The shortfall number given by Goldman Sachs and others will probably not affect BT because the firm currenty uses actuarial methods to figure out future liabilities, rather than the FRS 17 standard, according to Steve Truebridge, European telecoms analyst for SG Securities.
"BT's fund is determined on the basis of findings by an independent actuary. Whatever the funding level will be, the payments will be based on an actuarial view on what needs to be put into the fund," he said.
On August 7 international rating agency Standard & Poor's revised its rating outlook on BT to stable from negative following the firm's latest quarterly results.
