Interior designer Karen Trubner-Kent experienced two "losses" at the same time while running her business. Her business partner left the company for personal reasons and her grown children had "left the nest."
Says Trubner-Kent, "As my son had just started his first year of college. It was literally a time of new beginnings. My business lease was up and a new year was approaching, so I used the opportunity to downsize and re-focus."
To save on overhead, she moved her business into a home office and found the experience and flexibility of the arrangement to be liberating.
"Being the sole decision-maker was also very liberating," admit Trubner-Kent."I was able to gradually re-focus the business to better reflect my personal style and my inclination towards contemporary, uncluttered designs with Asian overtones."
A year after taking over her business, Trubner-Kent even changed her company's name - to Harmony Design Studio - to better reflect her overall philosophy towards design and life.
