Dorothy Truax, the executive director of the El Paso Foster Parent Association, says the foster parent group has been around for about 30 years and uses a lot of energy to find resources for foster and adoptive children. The group is not only a resource for the family but also for the children themselves in the city.
Truax, a 15-year veteran of working with foster and adoptive families, is well aware of the needs and support of those that need their services. The biggest concern, she says, are "the state cutbacks of Medicaid services, caseworkers and contract services such as therapy and foster-care reimbursement."
The foster parent organization is always looking for volunteers, individuals or businesses wishing to sponsor a child in a particular event or activity such as a basketball or football game, a band performance or dance recital.
"The more active you keep a child, the better off that child will be in the long run," says Truax."We try to keep the children involved in positive activities," she added.
