The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City recently released an 18-month study of census data to survey the state of 100 U.S. inner-city economies.The survey found that because so many people live in them, inner-city neighborhoods in the U.S. have eight times more spending power than surrounding neighborhoods.

"African-Americans' buying power is $700 billion annually nationwide, with $300 billion of that spent on retail," Troy said."Anyone looking for new retail opportunities ought to be paying attention to this market."East Cleveland Mayor Saratha A. Goggins, who is in talks to bring a Mahogany Village development to her city, agreed.

"They bum-rushed us, and they did it successfully," recalled Adam Troy, principal with Mahogany Ventures.
