Portsmouth, N.H.-After commuting for six years to the 128 Boston-area to work in high-tech software sales, Michael Trotta is heading west to work in the Granite State instead.
Laid off from his job five months ago amid the region's high-tech slowdown, Trotta, 32, looked unsuccessfully for comparable work in the region before landing a slot as business development manager for Pragmatech Software, Inc., a maker of proposal automation software in Amherst.
Unwilling to move away from his home in Portsmouth, Trotta tomorrow will start commuting 50 miles west to work.

For his part, Trotta, a University of New Hampshire graduate who grew up in Woburn, says he found the so-called ‘eCoast' not what it was cracked up to be.
‘For the last few years, this area was going to be called the eCoast,' he said. ‘And I know a lot of companies have either moved out or gone under or moved away because it's too expensive.'
At the same time, Trotta is too attached to Portsmouth to move. ‘I just love the seacoast…it's got a young crowd.
