While it is still too early to determine specific requirements, Nate Trost, lead programmer on the project, gave us a sketchy outline:
"You really really really want a 3D accelerator, either a Rage 128/Pro or a Voodoo2.With accelerator: any G3, 604 or fast 603e.With software: the faster the better.Minimum RAM is about a 32 meg partition."
Nate also indicated that Quake II will be using the OpenGL drivers for hardware acceleration, expected from Apple in the next couple of months. He also said that the game will "probably" have support for InputSprockets.

Nate Trost, lead programmer on the project at Logicware, has answered these compatibility questions:
Q: I am going to for sure buy Quake II for the Mac when it comes out.I was wondering if it will work with the various mods that already exist for Q2, like all the mods that work for Q1.I have noticed that some of the CTF updates for Q2 are in .exe format, possibly have to be repackaged in .zip format for the Mac?
Nate: The .exe are self-extracting ZIP archives, usually.Someone would have to repackage them. All the data files (maps, models, .pak files, etc) are compatible.MOD compatibility for multiplayer depends on the nature of the mod.Server-side mods will work just fine with a Mac joining a PC server.Hosting such a game from the Mac would require the mod to be ported, however.

Nate Trost of Logicware, lead programmer on the port of Quake II to the Mac, has updated his .plan file with notes on his progress:
"I now have switching to the Mac desktop functional.I've added two new console commands specific to the Mac version, "desktop" and "resume".Desktop, as might be guessed, gives you access to the Mac desktop, pops up a menu bar, lets you switch out of Quake II, etc. Resume plops you back in, although that's more for scripting, since input is decoupled."
"The "Resume Game" menu bar option will be a bit more useful. The whole point is to make it easier to interface Quake II with game tracker applications, etc. When playing a single player game, the game pauses when you go to the desktop.
