"Mary literally went door to door talking to the other farmers and getting the information for the brochure," said Michael Brown, co-owner of New Standards Institute.

Treat, who recently completed a renovation and expansion of her farm and barns, has asparagus for sale now, and will have tomatoes and 50 other vegetables during the season.

And Mary Treat, the owner of Robert Treat Farm, says it's not going anywhere, but is in fact expanding.In a time when small suburban farms are being regularly plowed under for housing, the Treats will continue on, she said, as long as the public supports the business.

As the late summer harvest hits its peak, Mary Treat talked about this season's yield and the enduring tradition of living off the land.

Mary Treat, owner of the Treat Farm here, said Thursday that she is considering a "market day" next season that could be held one or more times a week at her property on the corner of Merwin and New Haven avenues.

"I'd like to find someone who has really good fish and who knows good fish," Treat said."I'd have people with good milk, eggs and cheese ... the vegetables are something we'd take care of," she said."We focus on what we know best."

Treat's customers can already purchase milk from Smyth's Dairy in East Windsor, all varieties in glass bottles, jumbo eggs from a Branford farm and Stonewall Kitchens jams and pancake mix.

"People buy a share and the money pays for seeds, fertilizer and other costs," Mary Treat said.

Mary Treat of Robert Treat Farm in Milford is unfazed by reports of tomato blight in Pennsylvania.Protective measures such as fungicide and disease resistant varieties can do the trick at ensuring a healthy product, she said.

"A lot of our customers come specifically for Frasers," said Mary Treat, manager of Treat's Farm on New Haven Avenue in Milford.
