Tortorici was ordained a priest in the Dominican Order in 1972.After a four year assignment in the inner city of Detroit, he went on to graduate studies at Michigan State University, obtaining both M.A. (1979) and Doctoral (1983) degrees in the area of marriage and family studies with a minor in clinical psychology.While completing his research on adult sibling relationships he continued his education specializing in Clinical Psychology.Following seven years of full-time counseling ministry, he was assigned to Providence College where he served as the Executive Director of Residence Life with a teaching appointment in the graduate counseling program.Since 1994, Fr.Tortorici has been on the Faculty of the Dominican House of Studies holding the position of Director of Pastoral Field Education and associate professor of pastoral ministry.Fr.Tortorici has several publications to his credit in diverse areas, including articles on the psychiatric treatment of vowed religious for the Menninger Bulletin.For the last five years, he has been a regular presenter at the North American College in Rome, Italy, where he co-presents an intensive two week workshop on issues in pastoral counseling for seminary students from the United States.He has presented workshops in family therapy sponsored by Catholic Relief Services in Jerusalem, Israel, and for the priests of the Columbus diocese.He has presented papers and in-service training at the Menninger Institute.
He holds professional memberships in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the National Council on Family Relations, the Association for Theological Field Education (for which he serves on the Steering Committee), and the National Board of Certified Counselors.
