Mike Todd submitted the following to the Internet Society for inclusion in the ISOC Forum for the January 2000 issue :.
The December 1999 issue of ISOC-Forum contained a note about the November 4, 1999 meeting in LA (in conjunction with the ICANN meetings) at which we planned the Internet Y2K Status Project to track and monitor the transition of the Internet from 1999 to 2000.It was at that meeting that I made the recommendation that Internet Society Chapters around the World provide a place for Internet users and content developers to report any Y2K problems they encountered and also to get information about the problems others had already encountered. The reason I made that recommendation was that everyone else at the meeting was focused on the infrastructure (hardware, software, and protocols) and it seemed the users would have no place to report problems but to their ISPs.Within days of that meeting, I had responses from a number of the Chapters with their alternate contact information to ensure we would be able to maintain contact even if the Internet was unavailable at particular times or in particular places. The Internet Society Los Angeles Chapter provided the link from the other Chapters to the Operation Silent Night Project, the name given the Internet Y2K Status Project.
