    BISHOP Joseph Anthony Toal was ordained this week as he began his role as Bishop of Argyll and the Isles.

    Bishop Toal, who was a priest in Campbeltown and Daliburgh, South Uist, succeeds Right Rev Ian Murray, who is retiring to take up a parish role in Edinburgh.

    Bishop Toal attended Roybridge Primary School and the National Junior Seminary at St Vincent's, Langbank in 1968.

    He later attended St Mary's College in Aberdeen and spent six years at the Royal Scottish College in Spain. He was ordained a deacon of the college in 1979 and a year later he returned to Scotland and in Oban's St Columba's Cathedral, was ordained a priest by Bishop Colin MacPherson.

    Since then he has served in South Uist, Campbeltown and Benbecula before returning to Spain as director of the Royal Scottish College.

    After rising to the position of vice-rector at the college, Bishop Toal accepted the post in Oban.
