Ex-teacher worked as manager at Dana
Richard H. Titus, a schoolteacher who became a manager for Dana Corp., died Tuesday in his West Toledo home of heart-related complications of diabetes.He was 91.
He was a 32-year Dana employee, retiring in 1974 from the power equipment division, of which he had been sales operations and administration manager in charge of forecasting, budgeting, and pricing operations, his son, Thomas, said.
Mr. Titus was hired in 1942 as an accounting clerk and was transferred to service sales nine years later.
He was appointed sales-training coordinator for the power equipment division in 1971, in charge of establishing a training program and curriculum for the Spicer power train components distributor school.
Mr. Titus was extroverted by nature, his son said, and the position took advantage of that trait while allowing him to use his background as a teacher.
"He was proud of his accomplishments, and he definitely helped the company grow," his son said."He was an extremely business-minded person."
Born in Toledo, Mr. Titus grew up in Bowling Green and was a graduate of Bowling Green High School.
He received a bachelor of science degree in education from Bowling Green State University, where he was a member of the track and cross-country teams and the drama club.He also was business manager in 1931 of The Key, the BGSU yearbook.
He taught business classes at Rossford and Bellevue high schools and, in Toledo, at Scott High School.
He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.
He was a Mason and belonged to Damascus Lodge, F&AM, and the Scottish Rite, Toledo.He was a past president of the Zenobia Shrine and a past director of the Chanters.He was a past president of the Downtown High Twelve club and was an organizer of the High Twelve golf league.
He and his wife, Mildred, met in college and married Oct. 11, 1930.He liked big-band music, and the couple liked to dance whenever they could.Mrs. Titus died in January, 1998.
Surviving are his sons, John and Thomas; brothers, Wayne and William; sister, Mary Ellen Johnson; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary.
The family requests tributes to the Zenobia Shrine crippled and burned children's fund.
