According to Coffee County Engineer Randy Tindell, the Elba Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff,s Department are investigating a fire to a bridge on County Road 365 which occurred late Thursday night or early Friday morning.Officials are also investigating vehicle damage to the Newby Community voting house, believed to have occurred during the same time frame.
Tindell told Coffee County Commissioners yesterday the one-lane, five-span timber bridge would cost county taxpayers between $40,000 and $50,000 to replace.
"It,s sad we live in a world where there,s insurgency, but it,s sad to know it,s here in our own backyard," Tindell said.
"If the public gets outraged enough, maybe they,ll take notice of activity going on in their community and call the sheriff,s department."
Elba police investigators told Tindell the fire was deliberately set.
"According to police, it appears vandals soaked the top of the bridge with gas or diesel fuel. You can see a trail from the bridge out."
Tindell said the county repaired the bridge in November replacing timbers which cost the county $3,000.
