It is modeled on a similar program in Spokane, Wash. with a 27-year track record, said Bob Timm, the vice-president of Development at the Seniors' Resource Center in Wheat Ridge.

The Jefferson Center and its partners chose to start in Clear Creek and Gilpin counties first because those places have small populations and a high rate of suicide among the elderly.Expansion into Jefferson, Boulder and Broomfield counties will follow, he said.

Key is finding potential gatekeepers, educating them on what to look for and providing them with the call center number. Some of the things that gatekeepers might note include changes in mental and emotional state, financial hardships, substance abuse, physical changes, lack of transportation, food or medical attention, and isolation in the older adults whom they see regularly.

Project partners estimate that over the three-year life of the grant, about half those referred, perhaps 1,200 people, actually will need help, Timm said.
