CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 24, 1998 - William E. Timberlake and David A. Fischhoff will lead Cereon Genomics L.L.C., the genomics alliance between Monsanto Company and Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. created to apply genomics technologies to the discovery and development of plant and agricultural products.

Timberlake, 49, currently chief discovery officer for Millennium, and Fischhoff, 45, currently director, advanced genomics, and global business director for Monsanto's corn business, will share responsibility for leading Cereon as co-presidents.

Timberlake joined Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 1997 through the merger of Millennium and ChemGenics Pharmaceuticals Inc.At ChemGenics (formerly Myco Pharmaceuticals Inc.), he was a founding member of the scientific advisory board and executive vice president of research.Prior to joining Myco in 1993, Timberlake taught graduate and undergraduate courses including genetics and recombinant DNA technology for 20 years at Wayne State University, the University of California at Davis, and the University of Georgia.
He is the author or co-author of more than 100 scientific papers and holds two U.S. patents.Timberlake earned a doctorate in biochemistry from Syracuse University in 1973.He also did post-doctoral studies in molecular biology and genetics at the University of Geneva.

As co-presidents of Cereon, Timberlake and Fischhoff will be responsible for creating an enterprise dedicated to using leading-edge genomics technologies to help discover and develop a wide range of plant and agricultural products.

Cereon is currently hiring specialists in the fields of molecular genetics, bioinformatics, high throughput sequencing, gene expression and plant biology.While some employees from Millennium and Monsanto are expected to join Cereon, the majority of employees will come from outside the two collaborating companies.By the end of 1998, Cereon is expected to employ up to 100 people.
