Last week, McDonnell and Michael D. Tillyer, who founded the Anchor House in 1997, traveled to Washington D.C. for an awards ceremony at the gallery.
Tillyer said that many of the artists of Anchor House have had their work exhibited publicly in this area and some in Boston and New York, but McDonnell's painting at the Smithsonian is a first.
"To get chosen for a national show, it's a pretty prestigious thing to happen to Ryan.Ryan's work is spectacular. He shows what a broad highway he has to travel," Tillyer said.
McDonnell, who works as a janitor at the University of Massachusetts and is also a musician, started creating art as a young child and has had no formal training other than high school art classes in his hometown of Marlboro. He feels moved to create art, inspired by everything around him.
"I'm always making stuff, creating stuff," McDonnell said."It's very liberating, very calming."Working with the other artists at Anchor House has not only inspired him and given him confidence, it has helped him "stay grounded and be more aware of myself," he said.
