By Oct. 1, Millstone officials are slated to open the company's 105,000-square-foot facility in a space they are leasing at the South Park Business Park on Pleasant Hill Road, said Millstone vice president of sales Jonathan Tillman.
Company executives announced last month that they would be moving into the newly leased space, hiring about 50 to 60 workers within the first year.
Millstone provides a range of services to medical device manufacturers.
"We do everything post-manufacturing (for medical device companies)," Tillman said.
...
"There's probably seven or eight companies in the Memphis area that are medical device manufacturers that are running loaner programs independently," Tillman said. "So we really see an opportunity to come in, and as we work with multiple companies, we'll be able to help them run the companies more cost-effectively. Because there's a portion of the medical device business where the more volume you do, the more cost-effective you can do it."
Loaner programs are more convenient for surgeons who may be operating on patients in different places.
"So, sales reps for the client or an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) will need to cover multiple surgeries and so (the surgeon) will not have enough instrumentation on site at the hospital," Tillman said.
...
Millstone has five local employees so far, with plans to hire up to 13 more by the end of the year depending on demand, Tillman said.
...
Tillman said company executives moved Millstone to Memphis with the hope that they eventually will be able to establish working relationships with companies such as Smith & Nephew or Wright Medical.
"We've grown up our business around the major medical companies that are located predominately on the East Coast, some Midwest companies," Tillman said.
...
"There are hundreds of medical device companies now and a lot of them are located on the East Coast, and their cutoff times for shipping requests in some cases are 5 p.m. East Coast time, sometimes 6 p.m. East Coast time, so we're going to be able to offer those customers a cutoff time of basically midnight," Tillman said.
The company expects its new central location in Memphis to bear nationwide as well as global advantages.
Pointing to European companies that might want to do business in the U.S. but don't have the proper infrastructure, Tillman said the central location in Memphis, as well as the close proximity to "national distribution channels," will "give (Millstone) an opportunity to actually move into the U.S. market without having to put that infrastructure in place." -
