Food Bank director learns to compromise Peter Tilley, a proud graduate, took part in the Leadership Ottawa program in 2002.
"I would recommend the program to anyone," he says.
For three years Tilley has been the executive director of the Ottawa Food Bank.Prior to that, he worked as a manager for hotels and an industrial recruitment service. This type of experience meant that Tilley was used to being the leader.
"I had become accustomed to having the final say in most operational decisions," he explains.
Leadership Ottawa really challenged Tilley's comfort zone.Placed in a group of seven people, with everyone working toward a common goal, he had to learn to develop his listening skills, his willingness to compromise and the humility to admit that someone else might have a better solution.
However, the experience really paid off and Tilley suggests that anyone can benefit from the Leadership Ottawa program, no matter what his or her background or level.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the Leadership Ottawa experience has turned me into a better communicator and a much more effective manager for today's work environment."
Most recently, Peter led the effort to make the Food Bank more efficient and accountable by launching Food-Net, the first web-based communications system for a central emergency food program.
