"It's going to be a great effort," Ottawa Food Bank executive director Peter Tilley said.

Tilley is excited for this year's Food Aid Day.

"We're just so happy we're doing it," he said."We're one of the few food banks in North America, if not the only one, doing this, and we're happy to be doing it again. It's really nice when you see the difference we're making in people's lives, all because a local farmer had a vision."

Food Aid organizers hope to raise enough money to buy four or five cattle a week to send the beef into the community to provide families who use the Food Bank with ground beef.

Tilley says to do that, they need to raise about $150,000.

Tilley says the "CFRA Nation" has been a big supporter of the Food Bank for a long time, and he hopes they will continue to support this worthy cause.

"We're basically dependent on CFRA listeners to come through and do their bit for us," he said."They always have in the past. We're certainly confident they will."

Every dollar donated to Food Aid is used to buy and process beef from Ottawa-area farmers and give that beef to hungry families.

"Thanks to Food Aid, we're able to not only support local farmers and the local economy, we also support local processors and then turn around and send ground beef to families," Tilley said.

Peter Tilley, Executive Director, Ottawa Food Bank, Class of 2002"Leadership Ottawa taught me how to do more than smooth away or offer band-aid solutions.
    ...
    Peter Tilley

Food Bank director learns to compromise Peter Tilley, a proud graduate, took part in the Leadership Ottawa program in 2002.

"I would recommend the program to anyone," he says.

For three years Tilley has been the executive director of the Ottawa Food Bank.Prior to that, he worked as a manager for hotels and an industrial recruitment service. This type of experience meant that Tilley was used to being the leader.

"I had become accustomed to having the final say in most operational decisions," he explains.

Leadership Ottawa really challenged Tilley's comfort zone.Placed in a group of seven people, with everyone working toward a common goal, he had to learn to develop his listening skills, his willingness to compromise and the humility to admit that someone else might have a better solution.

However, the experience really paid off and Tilley suggests that anyone can benefit from the Leadership Ottawa program, no matter what his or her background or level.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the Leadership Ottawa experience has turned me into a better communicator and a much more effective manager for today's work environment."

Most recently, Peter led the effort to make the Food Bank more efficient and accountable by launching Food-Net, the first web-based communications system for a central emergency food program.
