Neil Tilley, former CEO of Upstream Technology, will become the CEO of Upstream Print Solutions.

Tilley said, "Few organisations know what print and copy output costs their business today.Upstream helps businesses identify and reduce those costs, as well as helping them figure out ways to print and copy less, the best saving of all."

"In our experience, many businesses have realised that outsourced managed print services is the most cost-effective way to control document costs, but they're looking for an independent alternative to equipment manufacturers.Upstream is that alternative," added Tilley.
    ...
    It's a win-win situation," said Tilley.

Tilley contrasted that model to manufacturers, who derive a majority of their profits from the manufacture and sale of high-margin consumables, thus providing them an incentive to encourage more printing rather than less.
    ...
Upstream will focus on combining the two companies' culture,a project being driven by Neil Tilley.

"Upstream incorporates some of the industry's leading talent, who collectively now manage more than three billion pages of output," Tilley noted.

Printing companies Upstream Technology and Print Solutions Australia merged in February-a marriage that has taken careful management, Neil Tilley, chief executive of the merged company Upstream Print Solutions says.

"Staff concerns were mostly about culture-people at Upstream saying they'd heard the Print Solutions culture was very male-dominated and blokey, and feedback from the other side saying Upstream wanted to be dominant," Tilley says.
    ...
Tilley and his business partner, Gordon Hoen, co-founded the Upstream Group, but run Upstream Technology and Print Solutions independently.
    ...
In the new company, Tilley will be chief executive and Hoen will act as executive chairman.
    ...
"We'll have our offices side by side so it's easy to walk in and chat," Tilley says.
    ...
Tilley communicates with chief executives in similar industries overseas about business issues.

A common theme when discussing mergers is the need to deal with staff fears of uncertainty by keeping people informed about company direction and why a new direction is needed, he says.

A chief executive should face staff and give them the opportunity to ask questions, Tilley suggests."No matter how much you reassure people, they will always worry about job security," he says.

Chief executive Neil Tilley's strategy for rapid market growth has been to connect with other small and medium business owners and operators to share and develop ideas and strategies.

"We developed the Coalition of the Davids - as in David and Goliath - a group of like-minded business people who were mostly concerned about how to grow when competing with large multinationals," Tilley says."For our business, it has been fantastic. We have gained ideas and strategies to get the competitive advantage."

Upstream produced a 29.9 per cent rise in profit in 2007, the company's best sales year yet, and also signed about 400 new customers, representing $14.6 million in new revenue.

Tilley says that through the interaction with the Davids, he was able to identify points of difference with his huge competitors.
    ...
Besides Tilley, the Coalition of the Davids includes managing directors such as Greg Roebuck of carsales.com.au, Wayne St Baker of Champion Compressors, Ian Rich of Aira, Martin Van Os of ITW Buildex and joint managing director Kerry Smith of PFD Foods.
    ...
Tilley says the skills shortage has taken up much of the group's time but perhaps a drop off in economic conditions may alleviate the problem.

The OmiSwitch 6850 comes in various flavors, there being 24- and 48-port versions, each available with and without PoE, said Neil Tilley, Alcatel,s converged solutions manager for Northern Europe. At the entry level is the 24-port non-PoE, with 20 copper ports and four mini-GBIC ports for fiber, plus two 10Gb stacking ports.Tilley said it lists at $3,995, putting it on a par with the hitherto cheapest L3 stackable in the market, HP ProCurve,s 3400YL.He said the difference is that that device doesn,t have dedicated stacking ports.
    ...
"You also only get a single 10Gb uplink for that price, so if you want to go higher you have to go for the 3750-G-16TD, with a list price around $19,000," Tilley said.

These will be integrated everywhere from the IP trunk to the IP phone, said Alcatel solutions marketing manager Neil Tilley.

"Some sectors I talk to do not think the standards stuff is enough, especially in banking and defence - they want special encryption tools," he said.
    ...
Tilley agreed, pointing out that strong encryption only forms part of a complete security process. He noted that the Thales modules use key auto-generation at all IP endpoints, thereby providing authentication and integrity without the complexity of certificate management.

"The bottom line is voice server security versus Dos attacks, for example," he said.
