Mike Tilley, an inspector with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services was to examine the infestation in Chesapeake today and come up with a plan to exterminate.

The aggressive ants, known for their venomous, repeated stings, were discovered Monday.They are not considered a threat to students or the main building, but their presence is likely to disrupt the soccer season for about 900 children in the Chesapeake United Soccer Club who use the fields.

The dangerous insects become aggressive when their mounds are disturbed, Tilley says.

"We thought they had a tendency to die off during cold weather, and when they first started showing up here, we assumed that," said Mike Tilley, an inspector with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Tilley said state workers who hunt and destroy the insects generally see an increase in activity as it starts to warm up in the spring and again just before the weather turns cooler.
