A 26-year Navy veteran , he retired as the opticianry school program director and as command senior chief of NOSTRA ; he was also chairman of the Commission on Opticianry Education and president of the NFOS for several years. The NFOS has honored Tilley by renaming the NFOS Educator of the Year Award as the Dennis M. Tilley Educator of the Year Award.
