Kyla Tienhaara
Kyla Tienhaara is a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and a research fellow with the international Global Governance Project. She holds a Master's degree in environmental science and law from the University of Nottingham (2002) and a Bachelor of Science in environmental science, with a minor in international relations, from the University of British Columbia (2001).
HEr dissertation examines the implications of international investment agreements for the regulation of the environment, particularly in developing countries. She focuses on international investment arbitration, framed as a form of private transnational authority. In addition to examining several investor-state disputes brought under Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and under several bilateral investment treaties (BITs), she also analyses the influence that investment arbitration has on negotiated outcomes to investor-state disputes. Finally, she also addresses questions concerning the legitimacy of international investment arbitration as a forum under which to resolve disputes that concern public policy.
Before joining the Institute for Environmental Studies and the Global Governance Project, Kyla was working for the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation, a small environmental NGO in Vancouver, Canada. She conducted research and advocacy on reducing the use of cosmetic pesticides in urban areas. Her work contributed to the eventual ban on cosmetic pesticide use put in place by Vancouver City Council in 2004.She has also worked and volunteered for a variety of other non-profit organisations, including the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall, England.
