    Velten Tiemann
    ...
Tiemann is preparing for his first vintage in Queensland, with Sirromet expecting to harvest about 1,400-tonnes of fruit between February and May 2006 from its 150-hectares of vineyards at 800-metres altitude at Ballandean on the Granite Belt and 12-hectares at Mount Cotton.

"Varieties such as Shiraz, Marsanne, and Semillon are new for me, and this will be the first time I have done a vintage where the cool climate runs by altitude, rather than latitude."said Tiemann.
    ...
"Velten has done vintages in places where I've never worked, so he brings new ideas and skills and that's got to be good for Sirromet."
    ...
Tiemann was born in Zambia, attended school near Cape Town in South Africa, then moved to Germany in the 1980s and graduated with a tertiary degree in viticulture and oenology from Bad Kreuznach College in 1992.

He then worked the 1992 vintage in Switzerland, before spending the next four years in Germany; 1993-94 at Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen, and 1994-97 as winemaker at Weingut August Kesseler Rheingau near Wiesbaden. In the 1997 vintage he was assistant winemaker at Seifreid Estate in Nelson in New Zealand, before returning to Weingut August Kesseler from 1997-99 as winemaker and viticulturist.

Tiemann then moved to South Africa in 2000 and was winemaker and viticulturist at La Couronne Estate, and joined Domaine A winery near Hobart in mid-2001 as assistant winemaker and vineyard manager where he continued working until this year.

Since joining Sirromet, Tiemann said he had been impressed by the increasing levels of technology and laboratory testing being adopted in the winemaking process.

"My winemaking upbringing is 'Old World', and I believe good fruit will always be the most important aspect in making great wines," said Tiemann.

"But what's great about Sirromet is they have a proper laboratory for testing - it's big, but it's not complicated and everything is there for a reason.Technology means better consistency with the wines and that's good for the customer."

Sirromet's on-site production equipment includes 85 wine tanks with a total capacity of 1.84-million litres, a fully-automated bottling facility which processes 4,500 units per hour.

Tiemann, who has settled in Brisbane, said he was excited about the future of the Queensland wine industry, and added it was rapidly increasing credibility in comparison with more established regions in Australia.

"I've been impressed with the quality, taste, and structure of the wines here."he said.
