    Thornton seeks WP Alderman seat

    WEST POINT -- Sandra Thornton has announced her candidacy for a seat on the West Point Board of Aldermen in the Nov. 4 city election.

    Thornton has been a resident of West Point for the past 22 years.She is the daughter of Naomi Stiggers Hill and the late Rev. Otis D. Hill of Lanett.She has three children, Michael and Jason Winston and Naomi Thornton.

    Interstate/Valley Telephone Company/Knology has employed Sandra for more than 25 years.Sandra is an advocate for the citizens of West Point and has worked in the public sector all of her adult life.She has remained active in the civic and political arenas in and around the city of West Point.

    She is astute and well qualified to serve West Point in the capacity that she seeks as alderman.Among her civic contributions, she has served as voter registrar for Troup County, board member of the United Fund, board member of Keep Troup Beautiful, president of the Pastor's Aides at Evening Spring Baptist Church in Lanett, and the Lanett Chapter of Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter, Inc.Alpha Kappa Alpha.

    With a keen understanding of the role of higher education in preparing our citizens for the challenges of today's world, she has long been active in activities aimed a procuring scholarship monies for local youth.As such, she has acted as judge for many talent and fashion shows throughout Georgia and Alabama.

    She is accomplished in her own right, having attended Jones School of Law and holding both the bachelor's degree in business from Faulkner University, and the master's degree in business administration (MBA) from Troy State University.

    She states, "Although there are many issues of importance to the people of West Point, I feel that the most important issues affecting the citizens directly are the need to continue to support the renovation effect to restore the downtown area, and to make West Point a target area for new industry and better jobs across the employment spectrum.

    "In this regard, the whole community must focus together on the overall attractiveness and convenience of living in West Point.This is particularly important to complete enjoyment, which may help to rid our communities of loitering and petty, drug-related crime."

    Sandra ran a strong race during the last election of the board of aldermen and was defeated by just a few votes.

    She asks for your support as she continues to strive to help make your dreams for your city our reality.
