"A key advantage of completing a healthcare directive is that your family members and healthcare providers are better able to honor your wishes if you have provided advance guidance for the type of care you wish to receive," explains Val Thompson, Licensed Social Worker at Riverwood. "In working with hospital patients, I've seen how beneficial it is for family members when there is a healthcare directive in place."

"Whether you are young or old, documenting your healthcare wishes today means that your family members will know how to make decisions for you in the event the need arises in the future," explains Val Thompson, Riverwood social worker.

Caregiving is the topic for the January meeting with guest speaker, Val Thompson, Riverwood's hospital social worker. She will discuss financial, emotional and physical needs of caregivers and offer information on American Cancer Society and local resources available to caregivers as they assist family members who have cancer.

"Our emergency room treats patients from time to time who have urgent needs that can't be met by local community resources," says Val Thompson, Riverwood social worker.
