There are about 330,000 acres of potatoes in Idaho, netting about $700 million to $800 million in a good year, Thompson said.

John Thompson, director of public relations for the Idaho Farm Bureau, said the House bill's specialty crop focus is good for his members.

"The block grant program and the market access program - that is a good thing for Idaho.Research initiative money for specialty crop production helps us," Thompson said."There's $200 million for pest and disease management for fruits and vegetables and pest detection and control and that is always a concern."

The bill leaves commodity support programs intact, including the sugar program, which is important to Idaho farmers, Thompson said.

John Thompson, spokesman for the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation, agreed that labor availability is the main issue, not wages.

Thompson said he hasn't heard any grumbling from Idaho farmers regarding the minimum wage issue.

"But I'm hearing a lot about not having enough help," he said.

Idaho farmers not only have to compete with other industries for workers, but they have to compete with neighboring states, some of which offer higher wages.

"The job market is very competitive," Thompson said.

For Idaho farm interests, reeling from perennial labor shortages, the impasse is the latest setback in a decade of futility in trying to create a legal immigrant work force of pickers and farmworkers."It's such a tough political issue because we've got people on either side of it," said John Thompson of the Idaho Farm Bureau.

"This is not a popular position he has taken," said Thompson.
