"Well, a lot of it has to do with the fact that Myrtle Beach during that time and prior to that was still an out-of-the-way place," said Jack Thompson, 71, an esteemed Myrtle Beach photographer who has been capturing the city's history for 53 years.

Myrtle Beach photographer Jack Thompson supplied the images for the CD jacket.

He said they were shot in the 1950s as part of the chamber of commerce's promoting the beach in regional newspapers.

"There have been thousands of young and old people who have worked in and around the Pavilion who today, still almost feel they have or had a love affair with that area," Thompson said.

Myrtle Beach photographer Jack Thompson remembers South Carolina's last true white Christmas.
    ...
Tarps still covered a number of roofs and piles of debris in lots were constant reminders of the storm, Thompson said.

"Following shortly after Hugo, it was kind of a sweet blessing for that to happen on Christmas," Thompson said."Kind of like Mother Nature kissing us on the cheek."

Thompson drove up and down the Grand Strand, taking pictures of the once-in-a-lifetime event. It is so burned in the memories of longtime residents that he included a few in his coffee table picture book chronicling more than 50 years of taking pictures in Myrtle Beach.

One that isn't in there is the photograph of the Chamber of Commerce building blanketed in snow."They sent that one back, said they didn't need people seeing that," Thompson said, laughing.
