In general, five per cent fewer students in the Cariboo Chilcotin region perform to set standards than the provincial average, Mark Thiessen, School District 27 Principal responsible for the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), said. The Foundation Skills Assessment test is administered to Grade 4 and Grade 7 students in May of each year in three categories; reading, writing and numeracy, Thiessen said. The test is the same throughout the province and it shows the per centage of students that are meeting or exceeding expectations for their grade level and how each district compares to the provincial averageHowever, Thiessen noted that the tests are merely an indicator, not the be-all and end-all."It's not an accurate representation of a students ability," said Thiessen."We, as educators, in this district generally don't put a lot of credence in FSA results because they are a one-day snapshot.Although results are an indication of what is happening with students, Thiessen said report cards are a much better way to ascertain a students achievement level as they are written by teachers who evaluate the child each day.

"The one result that stood out from the rest was our numeracy Grade 4 results," Thiessen said."I think we are addressing that with our new text, Math Makes Sense, and in the next two or three years we will see the fruits of that. The numeracy FSA test has a lot of word problems and Thiessen said the new text addresses them betterGrade 7 students faired about as well as the Grade 4s did.For reading comprehension the district scored 73 per cent while the provincial average was 77.In writing the district's students scored 84 while the province scored 90.In numeracy the provincial average totalled 83 per cent and the district had 79 per cent of students meeting or exceeding expectations."We've been below the provincial average for a long time, and I'd like to think that the things we are doing with our three goals-reading, math, and social responsibility -we will see improvements a few years down the road," Thiessen said.
