Richard A. Tener
Music: "Root Beer Rag"
Richard was born in Springfield, Ohio and moved to Van Nuys, California in 1955. He attended Van Nuys High School and majored in Humanities and Liberal Arts. While actively pursuing a future Ministerial Degree, Richard became involved in Theatre Arts Productions, Concert Choir and was asked to join an elite chamber group called the, "Vannaires". Upon graduation, he was invited to perform two tenor solos singing, "Comfort Ye My People" and "Every Valley Shall Be Exhaulted" from Handel's "Messiah". He was presented the schools highest honor award, the "Ray Conniff Vocal Award" for excellence in vocal music and musicianship. (An award his sister received ten years later!)
During his six year tour with the U.S. Air Force, Richard began working in his off time with the Base Chapel Program. It was there he organized and personally trained a group of 60 Airman and WAFs into the first traveling folk singing group called the, "Chapperals". This group was in great demand by Governmental Agencies, Civic Associations, Churches and School Districts up and down the West Coast. They were invited to perform for the L.A. County Fair several years in a row and won first place each time in vocal competition.
Upon his discharge, Richard went to work for a large and well established music store called, "Cheney's Music" where after sixteen years worked himself up to General Manager of all the locations. During this time, Richard taught the store's Organ Classes and eventually wrote his own teaching course. It was through this store that Richard's musical education and vocation was about to change.
Richard met nationally known Organist and Educator, LeRoy Davidson through mentor Mildred Alexander, World Famous Organist, Educator and Writer of her own course as well as artist for Hammond Organ Company.
...
When the store closed it's doors after 49 years and the owner retired, Richard continued his teaching through his own studio in his home in Riverside, California.
In 1995 Richard moved to Palm Springs, California where, in addition to private and group classes, he developed his unique Audiovisual Lesson program. The success of this program and the collaboration with "Mildred Alexander Products and Promotions" MAPP has made it possible to present learning to a wider range of students at all levels as General Manager of M.A.P.P.
Richard has been a contributing writer for publications including "Keyboards Today" with his column entitled "Breakthrough's", as well as his monthly column, "Step By Step" for M.A.P.P.'s International Newsletter, "Just Between Us". He has traveled in concert; set up workshops and seminars. He has written and published several songs copywrited at the Library Of Congress and assisted several of his students to do likewise. Several of their songs have been recorded on Albums and Cassettes through, "Rainbow Records" in Hollywood, California. In addition, Richard has been Minister Of Music in many Churches. He has written Choral Cantatas and special arrangements for his Church. He is soon to release his first Organ and Keyboard book entitled "Familiar Faces", with plans for a CD of personal favorites and originals entitled "Adding The Magic".
Richard also teaches the "Richard Bradley Piano Method" for children and adults. He is actively involved with the world of MIDI and keeps himself abreast on the newest models of Organs, Digital Ensembles and Keyboards. His first organ and current organ models can be seen here:
