Dr. Templin was instrumental in the establishment of the four-year course in journalism at The University of Western Ontario, working as head of a CWNA committee. He received an honorary degree from the university as a result. By 1945 there were three such schools with overflow enrolment. He was also a charter member of the University of Waterloo board of governors. As a director of the Grand River Conservation Authority he was closely involved in the flood control of the Grand River and creation of Lake Belwood.

After retirement he continued to write columns, and published a book about Fergus.

After a wartime trip to Britain in the invitation of the British Press Council he produced a series of informative articles which were distributed to members and later published as a book.

During Dr. Templin's presidency the association saw its greatest activity and growth. He and manager Charters visited the regions, discussing the recent hiring of a promotions man, the two per cent levy for this service, the possibility of moving the office to Toronto, and the need for an assistant for the manager. They added radio and service club talks. Dr. Templin said he ate enough chicken and peas to last a lifetime.

Locally, Fergus editor Hugh Templin pushed the idea during the 1930s and 1940s, proposing the creation of a park in editorials in 1938 and 1944. He had visited the area frequently with his pal Bob Kerr, the pioneering Fergus conservationist. Gradually, Templin could see the Elora park as part of a larger program of conservation, recreation and flood control on the Grand. By 1940 he was the most tenacious proponent of a park at Elora.

One by one, Templin found converts, in Wellington County, on the Grand Valley Conservation Authority, of which he was a member, and across the province.
