Speaking at the DigiWord 2007 Summit, Jean-Pierre Temime, deputy CTO of France Telecom, believes the Home Network Manager is a logical consequence of consumers having to manage multiple devices in the home."We haven't yet decided what the form factor will be, whether it will be touch screen on one device or built into all terminals," says Temime.

"The latest version of WiFi is extremely important, giving longer range so you can place the TV anywhere in the house and not necessarily next to the Livebox," says Temime."The higher data speeds also mean that it is ideal for delivering HDTV."

But standardization efforts to enable content to be shared between the TV and PC worlds have so far fallen well short, says Temime. One of the main sticking points is different DRM systems on different content platforms, which can prohibit consumers from viewing the same content on different devices.France Telecom uses DRM systems developed by the OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) and the uPnP (universal plug ‘n' play) "handshaking protocol" developed by the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance).

While France Telecom clearly wants to play an active role in the digital home ("It's a new field of expansion for telcos," says Temime) it is also stepping up its IMS efforts in the core of the network."We expect to have IPTV compliant with IMS standard [developed by ETSI] in Q2 2008," says Temime.
