   Eric Teittinen, senior vice president, operations and engineering for Florida Water Services, said the company's tap water is monitored for more than 130 constituents. "We have national standards and rigorous inspection requirements to maintain safety," he said. "When it comes to drinking water, there is no country in the world that takes greater precautions in protecting and assuring its safety."
   
   Tap water is not only tested more frequently than bottled water, but it is also treated with chlorine to destroy bacteria. "The residual chlorine in your tap water inhibits bacteria growth in your plumbing - all the way to the spigot, making tap water safe for drinking," according to Teittinen.

   "The result is great tasting water from the tap at a fraction of the cost of bottled water," Teittinen said.
   
   For those who prefer to use tap filters, Teittinen warns that the filtering elements must be properly maintained according to the manufacturers' recommendations.
