On a personal level, O,Brien spent six years as board member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, worked with the Center for Food Action and served as a board member of the All Saints National Landmark Trust and the Two River Film Festival.

In addition, he was elected to three consecutive terms (nine years) as a New Jersey councilman, and he served three years as a police commissioner.

A Washington D.C. native, O,Brien majored in English and History at the University of Maryland.He currently resides in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.
