Despite a record-setting performance by scoring phenom John Tavares, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors edged the Oshawa Generals 3-2 in a shootout last night at General Motors Centre in Oshawa.
...
Tavares is one player who has never had trouble scoring since he joined the Generals for the start of the 2005-06 OHL season.
He scored both Oshawa goals in regulation, giving him 21 on the season.
But more importantly, his second was the 178th of his career, one better than the franchise career record held by Mississaugan Tony Tanti.
"It's an honour but it's very humbling, too," said Tavares.
"When you take a look at all the great players who have gone through Oshawa, it makes me very proud.
But a lot of credit has to go to my teammates because they helped me get there."
Tavares, who is the nephew of Mississauga lacrosse legend John Tavares (a teacher at Philip Pocock Secondary School), has been the subject of trade rumours recently.
"You don't like to hear things like that," said the 18-year-old Oakville native.
"They're a good bunch of guys here.
I think we've got a team that can contend this season.
I just hope that whatever happens gets worked out."
"He (Tavares) is so hard to stop," said Mayer.
...
While Tavares may have been a factor in regulation time, he was blanked in the shootout, just like the last meeting between the two teams at the Hershey Centre.
In fact, Mississauga goaltender Chris Carrozzi stopped all three Oshawa shooters (Kory Nagy, Tavares and Andy Andreoff) in the shootout.
