The suit filed Thursday alleges that Tarlton and Moorse were allowed to continue teaching despite concerns that clergy officials had about their sexual behavior.

Tarlton was allowed to teach at the prep school after he was treated for sexuality problems at a licensed psychiatric facility in Maryland in 1982, the suit says.Three years later, he allegedly abused one of the suit's plaintiffs, who isn't identified in the suit.

The same plaintiff says he was sexually abused by Moorse in 1985.Documents from the abbey's files, which are cited in the suit, show that a year earlier clergy officials questioned whether Moorse should be removed from the prep school because of his sexual behavior toward students.

In 1987, Abbot Jerome Theisen wrote in Moorse's file that he wanted Moorse to teach at Benilde-St.Margaret's school in St. Louis Park despite having serious reservations about the priest's problems."I know it is a risk," Theisen wrote.

The unnamed plaintiff, referred to as John Doe 43, alleges that Tarlton and Moorse threatened him and warned him not to tell anyone.

In addition to Moorse and Tarlton, the suit accuses the abbey of engaging in a pattern of concealment and outlines alleged abuse by eight other priests dating to the early 1960s.The abbey has confirmed that all eight are living under restrictions.

Dunstan Moorse and Allen Tarlton, are among 13 monks who have had "credible accusations" lodged against them and now live under restricted living conditions at the abbey and are not allowed to have contact with minors.

Another priest at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minn., has been accused of sexually abusing a young man who was a student in the prep school in the 1980s.

This is the fifth suit in two years against a member of the Order of St. Benedict, the priests and brothers who run St. John's University, the prep school and the abbey.

The Rev. Allen Tarlton has been accused of molesting a young man at least three times in the fall of 1982 while the young man was a student at the prep school.Tarlton was the young man's counselor, English teacher and confidant, the suit contends.

The abuse happened in Tarlton's office while he was purporting to counsel the young man on emotional and spiritual matters, the complaint says.

The Rev. Daniel Durken, spokesman for the abbey, said that Tarlton has been on medical leave and has not been teaching this fall.He said the abbey instituted a sexual abuse policy in 1989 and revised it this summer.

Father Francisco Schulte, OSB, directing the retreat at the request of Oblate Director Father Allen Tarlton, OSB, was duly impressed to welcome all of the OCs -ahead of time- for the monastic community's 11:30 AM Eucharist. (No small sacrifice for college students who usually enjoy sleeping-in on a Saturday morning.) The OCs attended the Eucharist as a group and afterwards dined with the monks in the monastic refectory at the invitation of Abbot John Klassen, OSB. (A number of the OCs were overheard commenting that they might actually see themselves as monks of Saint John's Abbey if they could be perpetually guaranteed the same amount and quality of food.)
