Although lavender is harvested much earlier in the year, when the plants are at optimum bloom, owner Rose Tanner and previous farm manager Guy Paulsen chose the October date deliberately to add another dimension to the Festival of the Grape.

Tanner explained how tender loving care including hand weeding, pruning, hoeing and picking (they are an organic farm) makes the difference.

"We tried an experiment to see if we could stagger some of the plants to mature at different times but it just didn't work - we didn't get the quality of bloom or the yield," Tanner noted.
