Laymen Terms singer/guitarist Andrew Tanner admits his band's alt-rock sound would have been a perfect fit for 1992, perhaps sandwiched on a concert bill between The Smashing Pumpkins and Teenage Fanclub.

While both Alternative Nation acts definitely influenced Tanner, his identification with the latter band is somewhat ironic. In the early '90s, Teenage Fanclub was positioned for greater things that never came to fruition; similarly, national recognition for Colorado Springs' Laymen Terms has been derailed for years by numerous lineup changes.

"It's just like, right when we're about to get out of the regional realm, we get pushed back because we have to start all over," Tanner says."It's been a lot of bad timing with us, I guess."

In talking to Tanner, you can't help but get a now-or-never sense. The band, together in some shape or form since 1999, is currently being looked at by Chicago-based Victory Records.Tanner says that if a deal doesn't materialize, the foursome could pull the plug.

"We just don't know what we want to do," Tanner says."Depending on what happens, we might for sure end it, or go on hiatus.I might move to England for six months."

For now, though, Tanner is looking forward to the band's upcoming Black Sheep date. The band's new song, "It's On," already is in the mix.

"We've haven't played Colorado Springs in almost a year, and with our new lineup, we're really excited about," Tanner says.

ANDREW TANNER and MARTIN JONES ponder this and other heavy stuff.
    ...
There we are ... me in my office and The Sand Pebbles' Andrew Tanner in his, talking about music as if we own the rights to it.Neither of us are out there touring the world, getting tattoos, getting drunk every night, taking it to the people and living the lifestyle.Armchair critics.Well at least Andrew is in a band - and a very fine one at that.
    ...
"Yeah and I actually think that having guys who have day gigs and in that sense aren't leaning on the music to pay their rent or anything actually aids that process," Tanner confirms.
    ...
"If it actually did blow up," Tanner ponders tentatively, "that would be a very interesting experiment to see what that did to things."
