    "The toy recalls really have affected us," Salvation Army Capt. Allen Tanner said Monday.

    "They've already gone through the toys, so we haven't hit too many hurdles."

    Tanner said the Salvation Army has had to get more volunteers for the holiday season and still needs 200 more to help with the toy distribution.

    Some are working people that are having a tough time making ends meet with rent and rising utility costs, Salvation Army Capt. Allen Tanner said Monday.Other people show up almost every year in need of assistance.

    Nearly 40 people filled out applications for help on Monday, Tanner said.The bulk of the people showed up during the morning registration period.

    "That's probably normal for what we did last year," he said.

    Tanner expects interest to increase as people become aware that registration is underway.

    "We helped about 600 families last Christmas," Tanner said."We're looking at helping 2,000 children with Christmas gifts."

    Capt. Allen Tanner said the organization would like about 200 volunteers to help with an assortment of tasks.

    "This is our busiest season of the year," Tanner said.

    The Salvation Army needs bell ringers to help raise funds for the group from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Kettles are located in various locations in Danville.

    Tanner said the list doesn't stop there.

Allen Tanner said 40-50 volunteers will take care of feeding the 150-200 people expected to attend the dinner.Some of those volunteers will arrive as early as 7 a.m. to begin preparing the feast; others will stay long after the meal is over to clean up."We may go past (the scheduled 1 p.m. end of the meal)," Tanner said Tuesday.
